Wheat mill

Wheat mill

A Wheat Mill (belongs to the group of grain mills) serves to process the harvested wheat grain into flour. Mills were already used in Roman times and have been further developed from epoch to epoch. Today`s industrial mills are huge and computer controlled. They only have the basic principle in common with the "old" wind or water-powered mills. Today, the milling takes place in the roller mills, which contain several metal rollers that rotate in opposite directions in order to grind the wheat grain. The cleaned wheat is wetted with water before the grinding process. This penetrates the shell and facilitates the separation from the "Flour body" . This is followed by the repeated grinding process with subsequent sieving of the material to be ground. This serves to separate the flour obtained from the grist. The technical term for this process is Passage . During this process, a whole range of end and intermediate products are created:

bran grist semolina bran
haze Flour semolina

In 2006, out of a total of 318 mills in Germany, around 7.6 million tons Processed wheat and rye.
