Siebengebirge

The Siebengebirge is a German low mountain range consisting of more than 40 mountains and hills. It is located south-east of Bonn on the right bank of the Rhine in the vicinity of the cities of Königswinter and Bad Honnef in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The origin of the mountains is of volcanic origin. It is home to the state`s largest contiguous nature reserve.

The economic use of quarries and mining can be traced back to Roman times.
From 1875 mining came to a standstill for economic reasons. From 1930 the quarry activities were stopped for nature conservation reasons.

The seven great mountains
Although commonly assumed, these seven peaks not the namesake of this mountain range, the origin of the name has not been clearly clarified.

  • Lohrberg (435 m)
  • Nonnenstromberg (335.3 m)
  • Petersberg (331.1 m)
  • Cloud Castle (324 m)
  • Drachenfels (320.6 m)
